Decision on DaimlerChrysler van plant will not be soon

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA - Three states - including Georgia - are trying to woo DaimlerChrysler for a U.S. van plant. But the company says it will not decide this year whether it will build a plant for cargo vans or other commercial vehicles. <br>

Michael Behrens is spokesman for DaimlerChrysler's commercial vehicles unit at the company's Stuttgart, Germany, headquarters. He says the company has time to make the this decision is in no hurry.'' <br>

A Columbia, South Carolina, newspaper reported Saturday that DaimlerChrysler is considering the Charleston area for a Sprinter cargo van plant. It would cost $700 million and employ about three thousand people in its first phase. <br>
<br>
Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida, also are being considered for the plant. <br>
<br>
Local economic development officials had expected the car company to announce a decision this summer.
