MARIETTA - Life University, the nation's largest chiropractic school, has announced that Sid Williams has retired as president of the school he founded 28 years ago.

Life made the official announcement Monday. A university trustee said last week that Williams had agreed to leave and was working out the details of his departure.

Williams founded Life in 1974 and led it to national prominence, but the school is currently struggling through a reaccreditation crisis.

The Council on Chiropractic Education revoked Life's accreditation June 10 and cited the school for a number of problems.

The loss of accreditation means future Life graduates would not be able to take licensing exams to become practicing chiropractors.

School officials also said Monday that Life has filed a ``letter of intent'' to appeal the council's decision. They hope that the letter will allow the school to keep its accreditation until the appeal is resolved later in the year.
