Fugate lawyers ask pardons board to spare his life

ATLANTA - Lawyers for a man convicted of killing his ex-wife in Putnam County 11 years ago asked the state Board of Pardons and Paroles a second time Friday to spare his life. <br> <br> The board will issue its decision on the fate of Wallace Fugate at a later date, spokesman Heather Hedrick said. <br> <br> Fugate, 52, was hours away from the death chamber last month after being denied clemency by the board, which at the time was short one member. A Fulton County judge granted Fugate a stay of execution, saying his petition should be heard by the full five-member board. <br> <br> Since then, Gov. Roy Barnes appointed Michael Light as the board&#39;s fifth member. During Friday&#39;s hearing, a number of Fugate&#39;s friends, former employers and co-workers asked the board to spare his life, Fugate&#39;s lawyer, Stephen Bright, said.
