State unemployment rate rises for June

ATLANTA - Georgia&#39;s unemployment rate was 5.2 percent in June, up from 4.5 percent in May, the state Labor Department said Thursday. <br> <br> In June 2001, the state&#39;s jobless rate was 4.5 percent. <br> <br> Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond says he&#39;s concerned that the less-than-robust economic recovery and news of corporate scandals continue to impact employment opportunities in Georgia. <br> <br> Since June, the number of new jobs in the state increased by 6,200, while the number of people seeking jobs grew by 34,387. <br> <br> In Albany, jobs were down by 200, from 55,200 to 55,000. <br> <br> In Athens, Atlanta, Macon and Columbus, jobs increased. <br> <br> In Atlanta, jobs were up by 7,800 from 2,147,900 to 2,155,700. In Athens, jobs were up by 500, from 73,000 to 73,500. In Macon, jobs were up by 700, from 148,800 to 149,500. In Columbus, jobs were up by one thousand from 119,200 to 120,200. <br> <br> In Augusta, jobs were down by 500, from 198,200 to 197,700. <br> <br> Jobs in Savannah remained unchanged at 140,700.
