ATLANTA - Rich's will be experimenting with something new at one of its Atlanta area department stores, although it's old hat to the chain's staunchest rivals - discount stores.
In a trial run this fall at Town Center in Kennesaw, Rich's will have shopping carts and central checkout lanes.
Department stores increasingly are mimicking discounters and moderately priced retailers, offering reduced prices and in-store inducements like checkout lanes and shopping carts.
Federated Department Stores, the parent company of Atlanta-based Rich's as well as Lazarus and Goldsmith's, began testing carts and central checkouts last year at a Lazarus store near Columbus, Ohio. The company deemed the test successful and will bring the features to 10 to 15 Federated stores, including the local Rich's test site.
