COLUMBUS - Six military installations in Georgia will receive $141 million for new construction, with Fort Benning receiving almost half of it, $68 million.
The U.S. Senate approved the new construction projects for 2003 on Thursday.
Fort Benning's projects include $45 million for a new barracks complex, $3.25 million for an urban assault course, $8 million for access control points and $11.9 million for post-Sept. 11 security fencing around populated areas.
Funding for Georgia's other installations include $26 million for Fort Stewart; $29.4 million for Robins Air Force Base; $12.6 million for the Navy Reserve in Atlanta; $1.6 million for Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base; $1.45 million for the Savannah Air National Guard Base; and $2 million for Dobbins Reserve Air Force Base.
The construction package now moves into conference with a previously approved House military construction bill. The House bill includes an additional $6 million for Fort Benning to replace a 55-year-old Catholic chapel destroyed by a January fire.
Last year, the Senate approved $187.7 million in construction funding for Georgia's military installations.
