JONESBORO - The Clayton County solicitor has brought a third charge against a woman who says she was trying to protect her autistic son.
The third misdemeanor charge added Tuesday against 54-year-old Julia Munger is battery causing a visible injury. She already was charged with obstruction and battery of an officer stemming from the January confrontation when she stepped in between police and her son, 23-year-old Billy Munger.
Police did not charge the son.
Julia Munger pleaded innocent to the charges Tuesday.
Police said Billy Munger was using the men's room in the Morrow Publix on January 13 when he began screaming. He threatened to kill a store manager who went to investigate.
Munger originally was charged with obstruction. Solicitor Keith Martin says the additional battery charges are based on interviews Munger has given to reporters.
If convicted, Munger faces a possible sentence of three years in prison and a three-thousand-dollar fine. The trial has been rescheduled for August 26.
