SAVANNAH - Savannah will unveil its first monument to blacks Saturday on River Street behind the gold-domed City Hall.
The monument, cast in bronze in North Carolina, will be mounted on its granite base in Elberton and shipped to Savannah early today. Then a crane will hoist it onto its brick footing before Saturday's 3 p.m. ceremony.
The monument was sculpted by Savannah art professor Dorothy Spradley.
It depicts a family of newly freed slaves with broken chains at their feet. Its base is carved with chained and praying hands and inscribed with a quote from writer Maya Angelou.
