SAN DIEGO - San Diego State University is replacing its logo of a red-faced profile of an Aztec warrior with a red and black monogram reading SD State.

The replacement of the old logo is part of an attempt to improve the university's image following complaints from the school's Native American Student Alliance and Latino groups that the university's mascot, Monty Montezuma, and logo were culturally offensive.

The new design, unveiled Wednesday, will be phased in over the next seven years at an estimated cost of $100,000.

The search for a new mascot was put on hold July 19 after university President Stephen Weber rejected the image of an "eagle warrior," which was backed by most members of a committee charged with replacing Monty.

The new logo, the letters S and D backed by a spear, will be printed on uniforms, equipment and at sporting venues.
