ATHENS - A lake on the University of Georgia campus has been closed to swimmers because of a possibly dangerous algae bloom.
Lake Harrick has turned a pea-green color because of a bloom of blue-green algae.
The school posted warning signs around the lake, which could be off-limits until the fall when cooler weather returns. Walking trails around the lake remained open, but dog owners were advised not to let their pets into the water.
Officials worried the algae can produce harmful toxins. Even when the lake re-opens, a swimming and beach area will stay closed. School officials say the spot once was popular with swimmers but now has almost no visitors.
