SAVANNAH - Jimmy Carter returned to Pinkie Masters in Savannah this weekend.
Carter stood on the bar Saturday night in the legendary tavern hangout of the city's political types to give a reprise of a famous speech he made as president.

And when he stepped down, Carter politely refused a bartender's offer of juice or soda, saying they just wouldn't fit the occasion. He asked instead for a can of Bud Light.

Carter shook hands, signed autographs and swapped political war stories in a visit to the bar Saturday night.

Carter said Pinkie Masters -- who died in 1977 -- took him in during his early political career and helped him carry Chatham County in each election.
Carter had made the speech on St. Patrick's Day in 1978 -- two years after he rose from Georgia governor to become the nation's 39th president.
