FORT GORDON - Federal auditors have uncovered the purchase of $100,000 in computers, stereos and electronic equipment with government credit cards through Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center.
Eisenhower was one of the Army installations audited by the U.S. General Accounting Office as part of its review of the purchasing card system. The cards act like credit cards and allow military personnel to make routine purchases under $2,500 without having to draw up a contract.
In another audit at Fort Stewart near Savannah a GAO report criticized $16,000 of office furniture at Fort Stewart near Savannah along with lap dances, Elvis Presley pictures and John Elway football jerseys purchased by other posts with Army credit cards.
In a separate incident, a soldier at Eisenhower was accused of buying a computer, clothing, purses and rings between April and June 2001. Sgt. Katrina Middleton pleaded guilty April 15 to larceny of $18,000, among other charges, and was sentenced to 18 months, according to facility records. She also had her rank reduced to private and was given a bad conduct discharge.
Her case is to come up for review in a few weeks before the Fort Gordon commander, Maj. Gen. John P. ``Pat'' Cavanaugh, who has the authority to reduce the sentence.
