FORT BENNING - Fort Benning said Tuesday that a 17-year-old Army trainee died after complaining of dizziness following a mile run designed to prepare him for basic training.
Private First Class Nicholas Williams of Pinehurst planned to be a veterinary food inspection specialist.
Williams was resting yesterday after the run -- a post routine in which soldiers are evaluated for physical fitness -- when he complained of dizziness. He was taken to a medical clinic and later to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Fort Benning spokeswoman Monica Manganaro said the post is investigating and may learn the official cause of death in the next several days.
The run was outdoors, and temperatures near Fort Benning climbed into the 90s Monday.
