CONYERS - Thousands of dollars in donations will allow the continuation of a lawsuit over millions of dollars collected by self-proclaimed Virgin Mary visionary Nancy Fowler, Fowler's lawyer said.
A judge threatened last month to dismiss the case, but a handful of parishioners have given money to help Fowler continue the case, attorney Elizabeth Kertscher said Friday.
On Thursday, Kertscher sent a check for $15,000 to the Superior Court to complete an audit of Our Loving Mother's Children. The nonprofit agency collected more than $4 million for Fowler during the 1990s, when she attracted hundreds of thousands of followers to her Rockdale County farm to hear about visions she said came from the Virgin Mary.
``We are very pleased to see people opening up their wallets trying to make justice happen,'' Kertscher said.
Fowler co-founded Our Loving Mother's Children a decade ago. She now claims the group illegally uses donations intended for her to support other ministries.
The lawyer for the organization and its executive director, Bob Hughes, are skeptical of Fowler's timing.
``It's curious that people other than Nancy Fowler are all of the sudden investing in the case,'' attorney Michael Powell said.
