MONROE - About 150 Georgia troops have been assigned to guard the Taliban and al-Qaida fighters being held at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

The base currently has 384 suspects in the war on terrorism behind bars.

The Georgia Army National Guard's 178th Military Police Company is replacing the 988th Military Police Company, an active duty unit from Fort Benning that has been in Cuba since January, when the first prisoners arrived.

Eighty-nine soldiers -- all trained military police officers -- are scheduled to leave for Cuba Friday morning. Another 55 members of the unit -- most of them in support and headquarters jobs -- will follow in July.

The 178th was assigned to Fort Benning to take up law enforcement duties there after it was activated in February.

Although some of the members have served individually in Bosnia and Desert Storm, this is the first time in more than 60 years the entire unit has gone overseas on something other than a training exercise.
