ELLENWOOD - Family and friends of the late NAACP president Earl T. Shinhoster are holding a memorial service Tuesday to mark the second anniversary of his death.

Shinhoster was killed June Eleventh, 2000, in a single-vehicle crash near Milstead in Macon County, about 25 miles east of Montgomery, Alabama. He was 47.

Shinhoster Shinhoster was riding in a speeding motorcade led by state troopers escorting an African dignitary. The driver of the car apparently lost control after a tire blow out and the car went off the interstate, overturned and hit a tree.

Shinhoster was the only fatality.

Shinhoster, who also lived in Mableton, was the director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's Voter Empowerment project, a national voter registration and education program. He also was involved in efforts to raise census participation among blacks.

The memorial is scheduled for noon today at Kennedy Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Ellenwood.
