ATLANTA - Some residents of Atlanta's high-priced Buckhead residential area have been advised to boil their tap water because of low pressure caused by a pump station failure.

Low water pressure stirs up debris that normally settles in the bottom of pipes in the water system and inside homes. That debris typically contains rust and clay, which tints the water a brownish color.

Customers in an area primarily north of Phipps Plaza to the northern tip of Atlanta were advised Tuesday to bring water to a full boil for at least one minute.

That applies to water that will be used for drinking, cooking and preparing baby food. Deb Speights, spokeswoman for the city's private water supplier, United Water, said water directly from the tap can still be used for cleaning and bathing.

The advisory is in effect until further notice, she said. Water samples are being tested for harmful organics and United Water should have results by Thursday, Speights said.
