SAVANNAH - The Lucas Theatre board of directors announced Wednesday that it has deeded the historic theater to the Savannah College of Art and Design.
The school's vice president for admissions and communications, Pamela Afifi, said, ``We are thrilled to have the donation of a facility of this magnitude. This will allow us to enhance the college's offerings, not only for our students, but for the entire community. And it will ensure the theater's longevity.''
The Lucas, which seats 1,237, is around the corner from the school's theater, which has a capacity of eleven-hundred seats.
Afifi said the school's theater is being used constantly with more than one event scheduled on most days.

She added, ``This will allow us actually to have some breathing room.''

She said the school holds many different events, including lectures and fashion and artist shows, primarily for the 5,500 students, but the public is invited as well.

She said she expects the Lucas to play a big part in the college's upcoming Film and Video Festival as well as the southeast region American College Theater Festival in February.
Under the agreement the college cannot sell the theater.
