MARIETTA - John Hope, The Weather Channel's expert on hurricanes and tropical storms, died Thursday from complications following recent heart surgery. He was 83.
Heart problems led to Hope's semiretirement in 1997, but he returned in 1998 to help the Marietta-based cable channel's coverage of the hurricane season and continued to do so through the 2001 season.
Hope joined the organization in 1982 the same year the network premiered on cable as tropical coordinator and an on-air meteorologist.
Before that, Hope was a senior hurricane specialist with the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Hope, a daughter, three sons, a brother and six grandchildren.
Funeral plans were pending.
