FORT STEWART - Colonel Vincent Brooks is on the road to becoming a part of Army history.

His father, Leo Brooks Senior, is a retired brigadier general. Brother Leo Brooks Junior is also a brigadier general who will soon become commandant of cadets at West Point.

And Vincent's turn is coming. He's on a promotion list for brigadier general.

If he earns his first general's star, his family will become one of the few black families in which a father and two sons are Army generals.

Vincent Brooks has the credentials. He graduated from West Point in 1980, and he's the first in that class to get a nomination for general officer. He's also the youngest soldier on the list.

Leo Junior and Vincent also are a rare example of brothers serving as Army generals at the same time.

Vincent learned of his nomination last week. It must be approved by the Senate.

Yesterday, he left his post at Fort Stewart and the Third Infantry Division, where he served the past two years as 1st Brigade commander, for a position at the Pentagon.

During Vincent Brooks' time at Fort Stewart, he led three-thousand troops on a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, where they worked with the 101st Airborne Division.

Brooks doesn't talk about his nomination without crediting those around him.

He said, ``We're role models to a lot of young people not just African-Americans and soldiers. People can see the achievement and how hard work leads to it.''
