SAVANNAH - A fire broke out Thursday in the attic of an antique shop on the Savannah riverfront. No one was injured.

Firefighters and police closed off a small section of the popular tourist area to car and pedestrian traffic.

Savannah Fire Department spokeswoman Darlene Tuccillo said brick walls installed as firebreaks in the attic kept the blaze from spreading to other buildings along the riverfront.

The damaged building, which houses three stories of gift shops and restaurants, sits next to Savannah's historic Cotton Exchange, built in 1799.

Firefighters did not know what caused the blaze. Tucillo said the flames were still too hot for firefighters to enter the attic.
