ATLANTA - A teen accused in the death of a 21-year-old Gainesville man last week now faces involuntary manslaughter charges.
Nathan Combiths turned himself in to authorities Wednesday. Police initially charged him with voluntary manslaughter in the death of John D. Stump, stemming from a fight just blocks from two downtown concerts.
``It is not a reduction in charges, it is just a change to the correct charge,'' Atlanta police Detective Ed Christian said Thursday after Combiths' preliminary hearing.
Stump died of head injuries three days after he was struck in a fight following the venue of free summer concerts. Police interviewed 11 witnesses who were involved in the brawl.
``It was a tragic accident,'' Christian said. ``It was like a short fight in a schoolyard, and I don't think those involved knew that the injuries were fatal when they left the scene.''
In response to last week's fight, alcohol sales are being cut off at 10 p.m. and some police officers will be redirected from traffic to pedestrian patrols.
