SAVANNAH - ``The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys,'' the new movie based on a book by Savannah native Chris Fuhrman, will not be shown in Savannah.

The independent film opened Friday in New York and Los Angeles and will open in Atlanta and Charleston, S.C., later this month. Independent films regularly skip smaller cities.

Fuhrman's book is based on his experience in the Catholic schools of Savannah. The film stars Emile Hirsch and Kieran Culkin as altar boys who rebel against authority and fantasize about being superheroes in a comic-book fantasy world.

Fuhrman, a graduate of Yale University, died in 1991 at age 30.

``Chris loved comic books, and he loved animation,'' said his friend Laura Filson. ``He was very intense and very truthful. He went after things gung-ho.''

The movie's makers first wanted to shoot it on property owned by the Catholic diocese of Savannah, but church leaders turn them down, fearing the film would portray the church in a negative light.

The movie was filmed in Charleston and in Wilmington, N.C., instead.
