CANTON - A former Woodstock High School teacher convicted of having sex with a student has been sentenced to two years in prison.
Judge Jackson Harris also ordered Thursday that Gene Groves, 27, must serve 13 years of probation. The sentence includes the 50 days Groves has already spent jailed.
``You were a teacher, Mr. Groves. You had a professional responsibility to shepherd these children,'' Harris said.
The judge ordered that Groves participate in a sexual offender program. He also is not allowed to be unsupervised with children younger than 18.
The former social studies teacher and football and soccer coach was convicted April 26 of four counts of sexual assault and two counts of cruelty to children.
The charges stem from allegations that he fondled one student and had sex with another on two occasions. The girls said the incidents took place last school year.
