AUGUSTA - A Superior Court judge granted $100,000 bonds Friday to two men accused of murder in the April drowning death of a mentally disabled man in Lake Olmstead.
Gary R. Payne, 27, and Air Force Staff Sgt. John C. Kuykendall, 23, pleaded innocent to a felony murder charge in the death of 48-year-old Marty T. Gibson. The bonds were granted on condition they surrender their passports.
Assistant District Attorney Jason Troiano said investigators believe Payne and Kuykendall dragged Gibson down an embankment and threw him into the lake April 18.
When investigators confronted them with a witness's account that they were at the lake that night, the two gave conflicting accounts about what happened, Troiano said.
