DULUTH - Authorities said they found "several" dead cats in a freezer and about 25 others roaming through a house in suburban Atlanta after a neighbor called police.

The cats all but one Siamese were discovered Thursday after the neighbor became concerned about not seeing the homeowner for at least two days, Gwinnett County police spokesman George Gilson said.

Gilson said the neighbor knew the homeowner had cats and was concerned about their well-being, then entered the house and was overcome by an ammonia smell.

Animal control officers wearing respirators entered the house. They trapped the 25 cats and took them to a privately owned clinic. Some of the cats were dehydrated, Gilson said.

At least two cats were dead inside the home. Gilson would not say how many more were dead inside the freezer, nor identify the owner of the home.
