DALTON - Louise Hackney, whose career at The Daily Citizen in Dalton spanned 45 years, died Sunday after a long illness. She was 76.
Hackney, a native of Dalton, joined the newspaper in 1950. Before her retirement in 1995, she had a variety of roles, including society editor, news editor and managing editor.
She was managing editor when the newspaper expanded to seven days a week by adding the Sunday edition plus color photography in the summer of 1987.
``Being a native of Dalton she knew who was who, who did what, what was where and the correct spelling of anyone and anything peculiar to the area,'' news editor Wes Chance said. ``That made her a valuable asset to the paper and a great resource to work with.''
Longtime editor Mark Pace, who worked with Hackney for more than 30 years, said she ``helped make the newspaper what it was.''
``If you needed something done, she'd jump in and do it. She had ability, desire and dedication, all the things you need in a good worker,'' Pace said.
