ATLANTA - Georgia officials agreed Tuesday to spend up to $24 million for 1,500 acres of land in Chatham County -- a step that could be part of the state's bid to win a heavily sought DaimlerChrysler cargo van plant.
State officials are known to be actively pursuing the proposed facility, as are neighboring South Carolina and Florida.
But Governor Barnes, who chairs the State Property Commission which approved the expenditure, refused to confirm that was the intent.
He says it is a parcel of land for economic and industrial development for future use by the ports authority.
The money will come from a line of credit held by the ports authority.
