Times editor elected to AP council

JEKYLL ISLAND - Mickey Johnson, executive editor of The Times in Gainesville, has been elected as a member of the Georgia Associated Press News Council. <br> <br> Johnson was one of three new members elected at newspaper group&#39;s annual meeting Thursday on Jekyll Island. Other new members are: Renee Carey, managing editor of the Griffin Daily News; and Stayce Lee, managing editor of The Courier Herald in Dublin. <br> <br> J.K. Murphy, editor of the Gwinnett Daily Post, was elected president of the council. <br> <br> The News Council is the governing body of the Georgia Associated Press Association, which is comprised of daily newspapers that are members of the news wire service cooperative. <br> <br> The council elected Sherrie Marshall, executive editor of The Macon Telegraph as first vice president and Mike King, public editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as second vice president. <br> <br> Murphy, who had been the group&#39;s first vice president, succeeds Mike Burbach, executive editor of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, who remains on the News Council as past president. <br> <br> Other members of the Georgia AP News Council are: Cecil Bentley, executive editor, Athens Banner-Herald; Les Simpson, assistant general manager, The Augusta Chronicle; Andrea Lovejoy, editor, LaGrange Daily News; John Glenn, assistant managing editor-photography, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Dan Suwyn, managing editor, Savannah Morning News; Frank Sayles, publisher-editor, The Tifton Gazete; Kay Read, editor, The Albany Herald; and S. Jane Benton, publisher-editor, Thomasville Times-Enterprise. <br> <br> Officers serve one-year terms; News Council members serve three-year terms.
