COLUMBUS - A statewide task force formed to protect Georgia's deer population is recommending that the state close its borders to bringing in deer from other regions.
The move follows an outbreak of chronic wasting disease in Wisconsin, a disease with symptoms similar to mad cow disease, and include loss of motor functions.
Georgia has never had a case and wants to keep it that way.
In an effort to control the disease, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has ordered special permit hunts in hopes of killing the estimated 15,000 deer in a 289-mile eradication zone.
