DENVER - Authorities say an airline passenger mumbled, paced and locked himself in the bathroom on a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Portland, Oregon, forcing the plane to land at Denver International Airport.
A policeman said 42-year-old Venky Visveswariah of Beaverton, Oregon, was undergoing a mental evaluation at Denver Health Medical Center today.
He was taken into custody about 10 p.m. Monday night after Flight 1773, a Boeing 757 with 170 passengers, was diverted to Denver because passengers became uncomfortable. The plane then flew to Portland, landing safely.
A Delta spokeswoman said the initial call to police involved a report of a naked man in one of the plane's bathrooms. When police arrested Visveswariah, he was wearing clothes but no shoes.
FBI spokeswoman Ann Atanasio said the agency is investigating and did not know whether charges would be filed.
