NEWNAN - Three men were found buried under potting soil and sand in the back of a pickup truck along Interstate 85 southwest of Atlanta, authorities said.
The truck was spotted Monday by friends of the victims just south of the Newnan exit, in grass on the side of the southbound lanes, Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager said Tuesday.
The friends contacted police in nearby Douglas County, who notified Coweta authorities, Yeager said. He described the three men as Hispanic and said they may have had ties in both counties.
None of the three had any identification, and their pockets were empty. The license tag had been removed from the truck, Yeager said.
``We don't feel they were killed here,'' Yeager said. The cause of death had not been determined.
Ownership of the truck was traced to a man who left home Thursday, telling his family he would soon return. Family members in Douglas County reported him missing Saturday.
Investigators were trying to determine Tuesday whether the truck's owner was one of the victims. Autopsies were scheduled for Wednesday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
