FOREST PARK - An ammonia leak at a chicken processing plant sent 10 people to the hospital Thursday and led to an evacuation of more than 200 others.

The leak at the Filet of Chicken plant came just after power was restored following a blackout in the Forest Park area, general manager Chuck Kendrew said.

An electricity surge in a 3-inch gas line of the plant's cooling system ruptured a seal, Kendrew said, spilling liquid ammonia. He said it was less than five pounds of ammonia, but ammonia gas fumes went through a ventilation duct into the warehouse.

The 10 taken to the hospital were treated and released. Another 22 employees were treated at the scene, Clayton County Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Hood said.

Employees of Filet of Chicken and some other tenants of the building across from the State Farmers Market were kept outside for about two hours while the facilities were aired out.
