ATLANTA - Health officials say poor hygiene may have been responsible for an outbreak of the Norwalk virus that sickened at least 19 college students last month.
The students were attending a convention of the Pi Sigma Epsilon marketing and sales profession fraternity at the Omni Hotel in downtown Atlanta. Those who became sick reported nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Doctor Adewale Troutman - director of the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness - said investigators questioned several of the stricken students after they went home. He said many said they were sick before they came to the convention.
Investigators believe those students spread the virus by not washing their hands properly and then shaking hands with other students.
At first, officials suspected food poisoning but inspectors found no health violations in the hotel's kitchen or with food and staff, health officials say.
