GAINESVILLE - Saturday's rain canceled just about all the events of the annual Scout Expo in Gainesville except the Pinewood Derby races.

Rain or shine, the miniature home made cars hit the race course.

Race Coordinator, Assistant Scout Master Andrew Plyler, said 100 contestants raced their cars.

The normal turn-out is 300 to 600.

Pinewood derby racers found shelter at Jackson EMC on Old Oakwood Road where the Third Annual Scout Expo was held.

Plyler organized the Pinewood Derby Race anyway on an aluminum covered track that was not as vulnerable to the moisture.

Ten year old Weblo (1) Andrew Allen of Cub Scout Pack 10-99 was ready to race.

"I have a blue and gold arrow shaped car," said the Cub Scout racer.

Allen said his design inspiration came from the Inernet with the help of a kit.

Allen was confident.

He's been racing in the Derby for four years and finished third his first time out.

"I think I'll do pretty good," Allen said.

Originally there were over 25 special events scheduled for the Expo, along with food, games and other fun for area Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers.

The weather did not help this time.

Oh well, organizers said, there's always next year.
