DECATUR - A third Oglethorpe University student has been charged with conspiracy involving an anthrax hoax.
Steven Jeffrey Morgan was arrested Wednesday and charged with helping his classmates Joel Garrison, of Pelham, Ala., and Jessica Saulson, of Lilburn with a scheme involving an envelope containing baby powder that set off an anthrax scare.
Early April 28, a dormitory was evacuated after 19-year-old Melissa Shipman of Columbus found the envelope, which had been slipped under her door. She called campus police, who called 911, and a hazardous materials team was dispatched.
Garrison and Saulson were arrested Tuesday. All three suspects are being held at the DeKalb County jail on $25,000 cash bond apiece. If convicted, they face a maximum of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
DeKalb County Police Chief Eddie Moody said the charges represent the first official arrest by the county's Office of Homeland Security, a division of the police department created after Sept. 11.
``This issue of homeland security is not a game, not to be taken lightly,'' Moody said.
