WATKINSVILLE - A 20-year-old University of Georgia sophomore died during a church softball game in Oconee County this week.

Arlyne Nash, a former team leader on the Oconee County High School girls basketball team, died Monday night while chasing a ground ball for the Antioch Christian Church softball team at Herman C. Michael Park near Watkinsville.

Cause of death was unknown.

``She had just hit a home run the inning before, that's what I was told,'' Oconee County Parks and Recreation director Jone Taylor said.

Oconee County Emergency Services received a call at 9:21 p.m. Emergency workers at the scene performed CPR until an ambulance arrived. She was then taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Athens.

Nash's body has been sent to the state crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy.

``She didn't have any known preexisting medical condition,'' said Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry. ``There's no reason to suspect anything like drugs or foul play. It's a tragedy.''

Nash played point guard for the Lady Warriors before graduating from Oconee County High School in 2000.

Nash, daughter of Ed and Sandra Nash of Bishop, was a member of Antioch Christian Church and active in its youth program.

``In 23 years (of preaching) I've never had anything like this to happen,'' said the Rev. David Perkins, pastor of Antioch Christian Church. ``Folks are just kind of walking around in a state of shock. The family has strong faith. They're just fine, fine people. They're going to get through it.''
