AMERICUS - A 20-year-old Americus woman has been arrested and charged with murder in the stabbing death of her 30-year-old former boyfriend.
Lanica Moss, who said she was defending herself, was initially released by authorities following the stabbing at her apartment early Wednesday. But she was taken into custody hours later and charged when the district attorney's office issued a warrant for her arrest.
Moss remained in custody Thursday after a hearing set her bond at $20,000.
District attorney Cecilia Cooper says the case will be treated like any other murder case until Moss' claim of self defense is corroborated.
The body of Michael Bernard Taylor was found outside the apartment when Sumter County Sheriff's Department deputies arrived at the scene.
Moss told authorities that the 30-year-old Taylor had gotten into an argument with her, pulled a knife and threatened to kill her. She says she took the knife away from him and stabbed him during a struggle.
Moss says her friend, 26-year-old Derrick Waters, also was in the apartment. She told deputies Waters tried to intervene, but Taylor stabbed him. Waters drove himself to a hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition.
