Boys state track meet begins

JEFFERSON - Reggie Witherspoon is the fastest 400 meter runner in Georgia by more than a second this season. His time of 46.63 -- which would be a state record if repeated at the state meet -- ranks third nationally in the latest USA Today top performers listing.<br> <br> Former Douglass star Milton Campbell set the Georgia 400 record eight years ago. Witherspoon, a junior speedster at Wheeler, would like to go down as the fastest in the state&#39;s history.<br> <br> Wheeler track coach Chad Walker says, ``Reggie is all about setting records.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> His chase is one of the many story lines at the boys state track meet, which begins Thursday in Jefferson.<br> <br> Lakeside-DeKalb senior Joe Thorne can sweep the 3,200 meter run and the 1,600 -- possibly in state record fashion -- for the second year in a row.<br> <br> Landmark Christian is pursuing an unprecedented seventh consecutive Class A title. Marietta and Crim are looking to three-peat in Class AAAAA and AA, respectively. Mays is trying to keep hold of the Class AAAA title for another year.
