COOSAWHATCHIE, S.C. - An Amtrak train struck a log truck at a crossing Tuesday morning, and 10 cars were derailed and at least two people seriously injured, emergency officials said.
Jasper County Deputy County Administrator Ronnie Malphrus said there were no fatalities. Several passengers suffered minor injuries and two or three people had more serious injuries, he said.
The driver of the log truck told police he didn't see the train coming when he tried to cross the tracks, Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sherri Iacobelli said.
Uninjured passengers were taken to an armory.
Iacobelli did not know where the train originated or where it was going. Amtrak officials did not return messages early Tuesday.
The accident happened about 9 a.m. The site is in the southeast corner of the state, about 25 miles north of the Georgia state line.
It was the second serious accident involving Amtrak in as many months. Four passengers died and more than 150 people were injured when an Amtrak Auto Train derailed on April 18 in Crescent City, Fla. The accident's cause remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
