Search committee narrows list for new UAB president

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - A search committee has narrowed its choices for the next president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, The Birmingham News reported in Friday&#39;s editions. <br> <br> John McConnell, executive vice president for administration at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, and University of Georgia Provost Karen Holbrook are among those under consideration, the newspaper said. <br> <br> Neither search committee Chairman John Russell Thomas nor officials with the system would confirm the identities of candidates under consideration. ``We&#39;ve distilled it down to three or four,&#39;&#39; he said. <br> <br> McConnell confirmed he had been contacted about the job. ``I have discussed the presidency of the University of Alabama at Birmingham with officials in Alabama,&#39;&#39; McConnell said. ``However, there has been no offer made and, on my part, there has been no commitment of interest.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> Holbrook, the University of Georgia&#39;s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, is a professor of cell biology at the university and an adjunct professor of anatomy, cell biology and medicine at the Medical College of Georgia.
