Seminoles one win from ACC title; ACC baseball roundup

CLEMSON, S.C. - Blair Varnes struck out seven and allowed just two earned runs in seven innings to lead Florida State to a 12-3 win over top-ranked Clemson on Saturday, giving the Seminoles their 16th consecutive victory. <br> <br> Florida State (50-12, 17-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) used a seven-run fifth inning to pull away from the Tigers (44-11, 16-7). Clemson suffered its first series loss this season losing at least two of three to the Seminoles. <br> <br> The game was close until the fifth. Stephen Drew and Blair McCaleb had an RBI singles off Matt Henrie (10-3) before he left the game. Then Clemson reliever Jeff Hourigan gave up four straight hits. <br> <br> Ritchie Smith had a two-run single, Tony Richie and Bryan Zech each had RBI doubles while Jerrod Brown had an RBI single. <br> <br> Before the fifth, Florida State led 3-2. <br> <br> Varnes (7-3) allowed six hits and walked three, picking up his 38th career win. Henrie allowed seven runs, including three earned, over 4 2-3 innings to get the loss. <br> <br> If Florida State sweeps the Tigers with a win Sunday, the Seminoles would clinch the ACC regular season title.<br> <br> N.C. STATE 12-10, VIRGINIA 7-8<br> <br> RALEIGH, N.C. - Daniel Caldwell allowed only three hits in five shutout innings as North Carolina State swept a doubleheader with a 10-8 victory over Virginia in the second game. <br> <br> In the first game, Brian Wright and Justin Riley each went 4-for-5 to lead the Wolfpack to a 12-7 victory. <br> <br> Caldwell (7-7) walked one as the Wolfpack jumped out to a 9-0 lead. <br> <br> Virginia cut the margin to 9-7 in the sixth inning powered by a two-run homer by Matt Street and a three-run shot by Mark Reynolds. <br> <br> The Cavaliers added a run in the seventh to make it 9-8 before Chad Orvella beat the throw from the outfield on a sacrifice fly. <br> <br> Virginia&#39;s Greg Hansard (1-3) took the loss, allowing four earned runs in five innings on ten hits. <br> <br> In the first game, the Wolfpack broke open a 5-5 tie with seven runs in the seventh inning to take a 12-5 lead. <br> <br> Mike Prochaska (5-2) picked up the win for the Wolfpack, going eight innings while allowing six runs on six hits. Reliever Chris Marinak (2-3) was the hard-luck loser for the Cavaliers, allowing four unearned runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. <br> <br> N.C. State (32-24, 7-17 Atlantic Coast Conference) and Virginia (25-30, 8-16) next play in the ACC Tournament in St. Petersburg, Fla., which begins Tuesday.<br> <br> DUKE 6, WAKE FOREST 2<br> <br> DURHAM, N.C. - Zach Schreiber pitched his first career complete game to lead Duke to a 6-2 win against Wake Forest on Saturday. <br> <br> Schreiber (2-3) allowed seven hits and struck out three for the Blue Devils (23-31, 4-19 Atlantic Coast Conference). <br> <br> Wake Forest (41-9-1, 16-6) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after a sacrifice fly by Jamie D&#39;Antona and an RBI single from Stephen Ghutzman. Duke answered with two runs in the fourth, the second coming on a home run to left field by Kevin Kelly. <br> <br> The Blue Devils broke the tie on an RBI single by Brian Patrick in the fifth inning. They went on to score three runs in the seventh. <br> <br> Kelly finished with three RBIs to lead Duke, which managed just six hits. <br> <br> Wake Forest starter Seth Hill (3-2) took the loss, allowing three runs and four hits in six innings. Reliever Adam Hanson allowed three runs and one hit while walking three in 1-3 of an inning. <br> <br> Adam Bourassa went 3-for-5 to lead the Demon Deacons.
