ALBANY - Thirty-six workers at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany are losing their jobs.
WALB reported Tuesday evening that the notices were handed out this week to the employers who work at the Defense Distribution Depot at the base. The depot stores and distributes repair parts and other supplies to the military.

The cutbacks are part of a 1997 Defense Department directive, which ordered that 16 of the 22 depots across the world be more ``cost-effective.''

The restructuring will result in a net savings of 20 percent over the next five years.
Twelve of the 36 will be given temporary employment. The remaining 24 will be put in the Priority Placement Program for one year, which gives them the first chance to take an open position in federal government.
A transition center to give employment and benefit counseling to these workers is being set up this week.
