ATLANTA - Many parents opted to drive or walk their children to John F. Kennedy Middle School Tuesday morning - a day after a student was raped on her way to the school.
The 12-year-old girl was walking on a trail to the Vine City school when the incident occurred just before 9 a.m. Monday.
Atlanta Police Sergeant John Quigley said the assailant dragged the girl into a shed behind a vacant house, hit her in the head, punched her and raped her. The girl escaped and ran to a house for help.
The girl described her attacker as a teen thought to be between 15 and 18 years old, slim build and between 5 feet 2 to 5 feet 6.
In September 2000, a 13-year-old girl was raped in the same neighborhood by a man who dragged her into an abandoned house. Allen Brown Bailey was charged with that attack.
City officials are offering a $500 reward for information.
