ATLANTA - Authorities said a two-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed early Wednesday as his father struggled with a sheriff's deputy over the officer's handgun.
Atlanta police said Detrick Corbett Junior was in his father's arms as the man struggled with a Fulton County sheriff's deputy on Bankhead Highway. The officer's gun discharged, hitting the child in the shoulder. He died at the scene.
Police said the struggle and shooting was the culmination of a domestic dispute that began earlier at the northwest Atlanta home of the boy's mother. Police said the father, 22-year-old Detrick Corbett, went to her home about 1 a.m., beat her with a rifle and fled with the boy.
The mother, 22-year-old Tekemah Russell, and a friend located Corbett later on Bankhead Highway about 1:45 a.m. Police said Corbett rammed the other car before getting out and beating Russell again.
Police said two Fulton sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene, and Corbett -- holding the child in his arms -- struggled with a deputy after reaching for her gun.
Corbett is charged with two counts of aggravated battery, three counts of aggravated assault and a single count of obstruction of police. His initial court hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning.
The deputy, who was not identified, was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Officials said she has been with the department for 18 years.
