ATLANTA - Former Auburn football coach Terry Bowden has gotten into a heated dispute with Georgia assistant coach Rodney Garner after saying his former assistant was ``trouble.''

The Knoxville (Tennessee) News-Sentinel earlier in the week quoted Bowden as saying Garner ``played by a different set of rules than I believed in. If (Georgia coach) Mark (Richt) is smart, he'll phase him out. If somebody wants to say I'm not a good coach, that's their opinion. But when you come out and state that people cheat, that's wrong.''

Garner, who is recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach at Georgia, worked for Bowden from 1993-95 at Auburn as recruiting coordinator. After the 1995 season Bowden demoted Garner to an administrative position. He left shortly after that to become an assistant at Tennessee.

Contacted at this home in Orlando on yesterday, Bowden, who quit as Auburn coach in the middle of the 1998 season and is now an analyst for ABC Sports, said he thought his conversation with the Knoxville newspaper was off the record.

Bowden said, ``Rodney and I both probably said some things we shouldn't have said.''
