The annual Best of Business ranking of Georgia's 100 best-performing companies placed United Community Banks among a roster of top-10 performers that included Beazer Homes USA, Advanced Technical Products, Mohawk Industries, Certegy, and Crescent Banking.
"We are honored to be recognized among the best performing companies in Georgia," said Jimmy Tallent, chairman and chief executive officer. "This recognition is another validation of our management's commitment to superior financial performance, of our employees' ability to provide quality customer service and execute our business plan, and of our customers' enthusiastic acceptance of the community banking values which is the cornerstone of our business philosophy and culture."
The top-100 list is chosen from among approximately 175 publicly traded companies in Georgia. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, companies are ranked by five weighted variables: revenue, return on equity, year-over-year revenue change, change in profit margin and total return on investment. The figures were compiled and processed by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
"The annual Georgia 100 Best of Business is designed to show companies, their managers and especially their owners - shareholders all - how well they performed in the most recent fiscal year," The Atlanta Journal-Constitution states.
Headquartered in Blairsville, United Community Banks is the third-largest bank holding company in Georgia. At March 31, 2002, United had assets of $2.9 billion and operated 50 banking offices located throughout north Georgia, metro Atlanta, and western North Carolina.
