Report: Spurs' Robinson to retire after next season

SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson plans to retire after next season, media outlets reported today. <br> <br> Robinson, who was slowed by injury this season, has scheduled a news conference Friday afternoon, according to KMOL-TV and WOAI radio in San Antonio. <br> <br> ``At this point, we have no comment,&#39;&#39; Spurs spokesman Tom James said.<br> <br> Sources told KMOL that Robinson will play next season, the second year of a two-year, $20 million contract he signed last summer. <br> <br> Robinson, 37, the NBA&#39;s Most Valuable Player in 1995, saw limited action in the playoffs. He&#39;s suffering from a chipped disc, which has caused nerve problems in his back, legs, and foot. <br> <br> Robinson played in four playoff games, averaging 4.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in limited minutes. The Spurs lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the NBA playoffs 4-1. <br> <br> In the regular season, Robinson averaged a career-low 12.2 points and 8.3 rebounds. For his career, he averaged 21.9 points and 10.8 rebounds. <br> <br> Nicknamed ``The Admiral,&#39;&#39; he served two years of active duty in the Navy, and then joined the Spurs for the 1989-90 season, when he was named Rookie of the Year. He was the NBA MVP in 1995, a 10-time NBA All-Star and the NBA defensive player of the year in 1992. <br> <br> Robinson has played his entire 13-year career in San Antonio, where he contributes to several charitable organizations. <br> <br> He is the only U.S. man to win three Olympic medals, and in 1997, Robinson was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.
