GAINESVILLE - Just before the official start of the Memorial Day weekend holiday travel period Friday at 6:00 p.m., a traffic accident shut down Highway 365 in Hall County.

The accident happened at about 5:45 p.m. on the southbound side of 365 at Howard Road. State troopers said that 23-year-old Terry Baumgardner of Gainesville allegedly failed to yield as he was turning onto 365.

His car was then struck by the car driven by 20-year-old Joey Waters of Clarkesville. Waters was the only person not injured in the accident. Three passengers in his car were taken to Northeast Georgia with minor injuries.

Baumgardner and his passenger were also treated there.

A helicopter had been called to transport at least one patient from the scene, but it was cancelled.

A passing motorist said the wreckage, law enforcement and rescue vehicles were in the median by about 6:15 p.m. That motorist said the accident involved two cars and appeared to have been a "t-bone" type collision.
