WASHINGTON - Washington Fire Chief Ronnie Few, formerly the fire chief in Augusta has resigned amid questions about errors on his resume.

Mayor Anthony Williams announced the resignation today. Letters circulated by Williams' aides indicated Few sent a letter of resignation May 21, and the mayor accepted it immediately.

Few, who has been unavailable to the media for weeks, issued a statement today praising his work in Washington.

He wrote, ``I have been a dedicated, passionate, and effective district official.''

The resignation comes nearly three months after factual errors were found on Few's resume and those submitted to the district government by three top aides Few recruited from his previous job.

The resume said Few graduated from Morris Brown College in Atlanta and was selected 1998 Fire Chief of the Year by the International Association of Fire Fighters, a labor group affiliated with the AFL-CIO.

In fact, Few attended Morris Brown for only one academic year, 1971-72, and the association never gave him such an honor. Few blamed an employee in Augusta for the errors.

Few's updated bio says he earned an associate degree in fire science from DeKalb College, now known as Georgia Perimeter College, in Decatur.

The 49-year-old Few, a native of East Point, Georgia, became Augusta-Richmond County's first black fire chief in 1997, supervising about 300 firefighters.

As D.C.'s fire chief, he directed more than two-thousand employees, including about 1,400 firefighters and paramedics.
